3 Easy Drink Recipes to Help You Keep Calm and Carry On

Here are 3 simple drink recipes to end your day on a warm and cozy note.

The COVID-19 pandemic is putting everyone on edge.  And a lack of meaningful contact and connection can exacerbate the stress you already feel. But there are some simple ways to help melt the tension and relax at the end of a long working or non-working day, like a warm cozy drink!

Ginger Tumeric Tea

  • Servings: 2
  • Prep: 5 minutes
  • Cook: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 inch piece fresh ginger (or 1 tsp ground ginger)

Optional Ingredients

  • 1/2 inch piece fresh turmeric (or 1/2 tsp ground turmeric)
  • 1 chamomile tea bag
  • 2-4 tsp honey* (or white sugar, maple syrup, or other natural sweetener)

Directions

  1. If using fresh ginger and/or turmeric, rinse or peel and slice pieces.
  2. Add ginger and turmeric to small pot and place on stove over medium-low heat.
  3. Bring mixture to a boil.
  4. If using fresh ginger and turmeric boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, then add tea bag and steep for 2 minutes, optional.
  5. If using ground ginger or turmeric, reduce heat to low, then add tea bag and simmer for 2 minutes, optional.
  6. Remove from heat and serve warm with optional sweetener.

*Adjust measurement as needed for sugar substitutes like stevia and sucralose.

Hot Apple Cider

  • Servings: 4
  • Prep: 5 minutes
  • Cook: 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 gallon (32 oz) apple cider (or unfiltered apple juice, fresh juiced apples, or your favorite hard cider)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks (or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon)

Optional Ingredients

  • 2-3 tbsp brown sugar* (or maple syrup, honey, white sugar, molasses, or other natural sweetener)
  • 1/2 tsp whole cloves (or pinch ground cloves)
  • 1/2 tsp whole allspice (or pinch ground allspice)
  • 1/3 tsp black peppercorns (or pinch ground black pepper)
  • 1 orange
  • 1 orange, for garnish
  • 4 cinnamon sticks, for garnish

Directions

  1. Zest and/or juice 1 orange, or slice into rounds and remove seeds, optional. Slice second orange into rounds for garnish, optional.
  2. Add all ingredients to medium pot and place on stove over medium-high heat.
  3. Bring mixture to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low and boil for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and serve warm with optional garnish.

*Adjust measurement as needed for sugar substitutes like stevia and sucralose, however these provide less than ideal flavor.

Spiced Mulled Wine

  • Servings: 4-6
  • Prep: 5 minutes
  • Cook: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine
  • 1 orange
  • 3 cinnamon sticks (or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon)
  • 1/4 cup honey* (or maple syrup, brown or white sugar, or other natural sweetener)

Optional Ingredients

  • 6 whole cloves (or pinch ground cloves)
  • 1/2 tsp black peppercorns (or pinch ground black pepper)
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 4-6 cinnamon sticks, for garnish
  • 1 orange, for garnish

Directions

  1. Slice orange(s) into rounds and remove seeds.
  2. Add all ingredients to medium pot and place on stove over medium heat.
  3. Stir mixture to dissolve sweetener.
  4. Bring mixture to a simmer but do not boil.
  5. Reduce heat to low and gently simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and serve warm with optional garnish.

*Adjust measurement as needed for molasses and sugar substitutes like stevia and sucralose, however these provide less than ideal flavor.
